TV stars give as good as they get at Emmy swag suites

Every rich and famous celebrity in Hollywood loves to get free stuff. Doesn’t matter if they’re an A-list movie star or a newbie guest on their first TV series. Swag is like celebrity crack. Once they try it, they always come back for more.

That’s why the celebrity gifting suites – or as I like to call them – celebrity looting suites– are still going strong. And the 2011 Emmy suites held last weekend were no exception.

The hottest (and most conveniently located) Emmy swag suites were the HBO Luxury Lounge – held at the Four Seasons hotel, which was already packed with Emmy nominees in from out of town – and the HP TouchSmart Gift Lounge – held backstage at the Nokia Theatre during Saturday Emmy rehearsals and the actual  Sunday night show. Just like in real estate, successful suites are all about location, location, location.

Over at the HP TouchSmart Lounge,  Emmy nominees and guests were playing the wildly popular video game Angry Birds on the HP TouchSmart PC (they even have a new laptop and tablet rolled into one And no, it’s not in the stores yet). For every star that played Angry Birds, HP donated money based on their scores. The final tally hit over $100,000 and it all went to the Academy of Television and Arts and Sciences Foundation. Needless to say, this charitable touch-n-give aspect drew in lots of stars, including a cleaned-up Charlie Sheen, clearly anxious to get back in the fold.

Movie stars see movies for free, right? Not exactly. Stars usually don’t even stay for their own premieres and 0ften see their films (and others)  incognito at theaters with real people, otherwise known as civilians. That’s why stars love getting their AMC Signature Pass card that gets them (and a guest) in for free to any AMC theatre anywhere in the country.

Akon slid his new AMC card into his tux pocket on Emmy night to keep it safe. Access Hollywood’s Mario Lopez told us he uses his all the time. Even Entourage star Jerry Ferrera snagged one for himself and his girlfriend. If you don’t have an AMC card, you can still see free movies (and get free popcorn) by signing up for the AMC Stubs membership.

Charlie Sheen gets into Ashton Kutcher’s pants backstage during Emmys!

A healthy, sober, smiling and clean-scrubbed Charlie Sheen (with a few new molars in place) delivered an appropriately deadpan mea culpa at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night. And it went off pretty well. He was subdued, a little sheepish and he sounded surprisingly sincere when he wished the new “Three and a Half Men show” — starring Ashton Kutcher — all the best. And judging from the reviews I’ve read, the Ashton-helmed “Men” is gonna need all the help it can get. The premiere episode’s penis praise got stale before the second commercial break.

But it seems Charlie is willing to go to any lengths to get back in Hollywood’s good graces. Including trying to get into Ashton Kutcher’s pants  during the Emmys at the HP TouchSmart Gift Lounge backstage at the Nokia Theatre

OK, here’s what happened.

California Spirit Gourmet Gala raises funds for American Cancer Society

There’s nothing like fantastic food (and lots of it)  from top Los Angeles chefs and great California wines to get people excited about supporting a very good cause.

Founding partner of the iconic Beverly Hills eaterie Spago, Barbara Lazaroff, along with her ex-husband chef Wolfgang Puck and friend — former head of Paramount Studios head Sherry Lansing – hosted the 27th annual California Spirit Gourmet Gala on Sunday (Aug. 7) benefitting the American Cancer Society. The ACS is the nation’s largest private, non-profit source of funds for ongoing cancer research.

Hungry Angelino foodies and wine lovers (over 650 of them) had a field day at the event held at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. Everyone was tasting the scrumptious creations from the top-rated chefs in Los Angeles with an excellent array of California wines.

The honoree of the event was Margaret Loesch, the founding CEO and president of The Hub, the children’s network brand on the Discovery Channel.

Porn star Ginger Lee says Anthony Weiner helped her lie

NY  Congressman Anthony Weiner and former porn star Ginger Lee were longtime sexting pals. But according to TMZ, when the twitter photo scandal broke, Weiner kindly offered her help with media onslaught. What a guy!

He wrote: “Do you need to talk to a professional PR type person to give u advice?  I can have someone on my team call. [Yeah, my team is doing great. Ugh].”

Weiner told Lee to lie about their relationship.  On June 1, he emailed:  “Have a couple of iterations of: ‘This is silly.  Like so many others, I follow Rep. Weiner on Twitter.  I don’t know him and have never met him. He briefly followed me and sent me a dm saying thank you for the follow.  That’s it.’”

On June 2, Weiner sent her the perfect lie, er statement that read:  “I have nothing to do with the situation involving Rep Weiner.  I follow his twitter feed.  And for a brief time he followed me.  Much has been made of the fact that I have posted about my admiration for Rep Weiner and his politics.  All I can say about that is that I’m a fan of his.  Rep. Weiner sent me one short direct message thanking me for following him.  I have never met Rep. Weiner and he has never sent me anything inappropriate.”

The level of the man’s deceit is amazing. One wonders how he had time or energy for his day job, the small task of serving the state of New York.

Anyone else think this Weiner is toasted?

Maria Bello, Michael Sheen: The tragic love story of ‘Beautiful Boy’

At first glance, Beautiful Boy — now in theatres — may not sound like your typical summer movie. But trust me, when Oscar season 2012 rolls around, watch out. This powerful film deserves to be nominated for major acting, directing and screen writing awards. The wheels were already set in motion for Oscar buzz when the movie earned the International Critics Discovery Award at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.

Boy is the tender and tragic story of a couple (played by Maria Bello and Michael Sheen) who have drifted apart and are on the verge of a separation. Suddenly, they’re devastated by news that their only son, 18, has massacred fellow students and teachers at his college, then killed himself. Through this unimaginable horror and the ensuing emotional roller coast of confusion, disbelief, grief, regret, blame and guilt, the estranged husband and wife must struggle to communicate, commiserate and reconnect.

‘Meeting Spencer’ opens in Los Angeles on April 22. Prepare to laugh

Meeting Spencer opens in Los Angeles Friday (Apr. 22) In case you missed my review of this hilarious indie screwball comedy, click here and watch the trailer.

This film is so deliciously witty, so scathingly devious, so well-cast, acted and directed, it will make you remember why you love going to the movies. Can’t say that about too many films these days.

Will Scarlett Johansson freeze off her belly fat? Get in line!

Several unflattering paparazzi photos of Scarlett Johansson running with Sean Penn and a very noticeable belly bulge sparked rumors this week of a possible pregnancy and/or a weight problem.

Since a pregnancy has been firmly denied by her rep, who also claims that Scarlett “is in the best shape of her life,” the Dish Rag did some research to find a cure for ScarJo’s plight.

First off, you are not alone, Scarlett. I think I speak for millions of women who have similar tummy trouble; the inability to lose annoying belly fat. I call mine my Famine Pouch since I would surely be able to survive a few weeks in the wilderness without food. I could live off the annoying excess blubber stored just below my belly button.

Let’s flash back to the Oscars red carpet. Remember that gorgeous young blond in the fitted, simple elegant red dress?

Of course you do. We all do.

Well, that was Jennifer Lawrence, who, at age 20, was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her breakout role in the Missouri-Gothic movie, Winter’s Bone. Since then, she’s played a young blue Mystique in the X-Men prequel, soon to open. And she’s also landed the coveted role in the hotly anticipated film, The Hunger Games, about a teenage girl forced to compete in a battle to the death in a post apocalyptic world.

Practically overnight, Jennifer has joined the healthy ranks of the Hot Hollywood Blondes Who Can Act Club, an elite group that also includes Teresa Palmer and Abbie Cornish.
