Jodie Foster calls Mel Gibson ‘a brilliant man, a beautiful talent’

Director and actor Jodie Foster talks to AARP: The Magazine about her new film, The Beaver, and about working with her good friend Mel Gibson.
On working on The Beaver:

“The film struck a personal chord for me. It delves into the loneliness we all feel, faced with life’s burdens. The only way to even try to cope is to connect.”

On casting Gibson:

“I knew he could relate so much to Walter’s struggles that there was no way he would it as a comedy. That Mel’s character be dramatically consumed in this internal struggle was very important to me.”

On her friendship with Gibson:

“From the moment I met him, there was such a connection that I knew we would be friends for the rest of my life. We work exactly in the same way: No bull—-. We’ve had so many conversations about the topics the film explores. He is a brilliant man, a beautiful talent, and a loyal, loyal friend. That’s the man I know.”

The defense would now like to call its next witness. Mel Gibson’s former wife Robyn Gibson.

Rob Reiner’s winning senior moment at AARP Awards

“Stand By Me” director Rob Reiner woke everyone up at Monday night’s AARP: The Magazine’s Movies for Grownups Awards  (Feb. 7). Then he got the whole Beverly Regent Wilshire ballroom laughing so hard that their black satin napkins slid off their laps. Again!

First, he thanked his father — Carl Reiner — for making love to his mother 64 years ago. Rob says his mother and father only did it three times but his dad Carl shouted from offstage that it was the “best experience” of his life and insisted they did it ten times. Whatever.

Then Rob thanked AARP for making changes to the award (they added a box of popcorn and a soda) which he said used to look like an electric chair. It’s supposed to be a theatre seat. But he told them two years ago that it really looked like “euthanasia.” Oh, and the napkins were also problematic.
