Did Ricky Gervais go too far? Stars say no! You?

Did Ricky Gervais step over the line hosting the Globes Sunday night?

There were a few audible gasps and moans with scattered giggles during his opening monologue that poked fun at Cher, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, and the HFPA.

And the next day, rumors flew that the Golden Globes was not going to ask him back and that they were horrified at his skewering their hard-sought-after stars. Hollywood Foreign Press honcho Philip Berke released a statement saying that while they hadn’t seen the script beforehand, they thought he definitely “crossed the line” and added, “Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones”

However, Berke did not confirm or deny the rumors that Ricky wouldn’t be asked back to host next year. Ricky himself tweeted that no stars were offended and that he partied with many of them after the show.

I have no idea if he ran into Johnny or Angelina. But I was at the HBO post party and watched Ricky eating dinner like he hadn’t eaten in days and laughing it up with Tim Allen. Allen’s co-presenter Tom Hanks also reassured the formerly pudgy comedian that he was still “cuddly.” And I heard  Jimmy Fallon say that Ricky did a great job at the NBC Universal party. Now more celebs have come to Ricky’s defense:

Where will Gilles Marini sleep in New York?

Two days before the Golden Globes, the annual HBO Luxury Globes Lounge at the Four Seasons was once again packed with A-listers who came for L’Oreal makeovers and left with goodies like Activision’s DJ Hero, Guitar Hero and Warriors of Rock games, Boiron homeopathic medicine, Magaschoni cashmere and Uppababy strollers.

Two of the hottest gifts at the Luxury Lounge were the two-night stays (plus four hours of car service) at The Surrey Hotel on the upper East Side and The James Hotel down in SoHo, New York. “Brothers and Sisters” French hunk Gilles Marini was speechless over his luxury hotel stay. I don’t know about you but I would kill to stay in the same hotel as Gilles. And “How I Met Your Mother” Jennifer Morrison was already planning her next Big Apple trip.

Also smile-making: everyone got free 1-year complimentary memberships to the Sports Club /LA, where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes regularly take Rev (spin) classes.

Next up was the adorable Hallmark Recordable Storybooks like “My Little Princess” and “Counting Kisses.” Mommies or Daddies can record themselves reading the book and then their kids can listen to their parents’ anytime they want. Interestingly, “Bachelorette” Ali Fedowsky (who was wearing a very loose fitting dress) and her fiancé Roberto Martinez were anxious to get these. You don’t think?

William Shatner – infamousk for his unique spoken word songs and reading Sarah Palin poetry on talk shows — picked up two storybooks. We’d so love to hear his storybook recording. Anyway, wW\e couldn’t help thinking what perfect gifts these books would be for Natalie Portman, Penelope Cruz and Jane Krakowski, who showed off their baby bumps at the Globes Sunday night.

Neil Patrick Harris sentenced to Netflix for life!

Why do the stars who aren’t even nominated for aGolden Globe or an Oscars love the awards season? Because they all get invited to the Globe and Oscar Swag Suites, er, Celebrity Gifting Lounges, that are still popular ways for big and small brands to curry favor with celebrities.

One popular suite on Golden Globes weekend was The Access Hollywood 5th Annual Stuff You Must Lounge at the Sofitel Hotel in West Hollywood. Proceeds from this event go to the Lollipop Theater, an organization that brings movies to kids with life-threatening illnesses in hospital around the US and Best Buddies, dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.

Angelina Jolie sparkles in green Versace gown

Angelina Jolie, whose film “The Tourist” was nominated for a very controversial Golden Globes award, showed up at the Globes red carpet in her usual designer – Versace — and her usual arm candy, Brad Pitt.

But she went a little Vegas in her color choice, picking a bright sparkly green gown with a low back and a demure front.

There’s been a lot of green on the Globes carpet today. “Mad Men” star Elizabeth Moss wore  a forest green strapless Donna Karan gown, “Black Swan” star Mila Kunis also did green, which is not really an easy color to wear.

What do you think of the green trend?

Globes Fashion surprise: Natalie Portman in Viktor and Rolf?

Everyone — including the Dish Rag — predicted that Natalie Portman would probably wear Rodarte or Dior to the Golden Globes. After all, Rodarte designed the ballet tutus for “The Black Swan” and Natalie is under contract to Dior, although not for fashion.

But style surprise! She showed up looking stunning in a pale pink satin empire waist gown by another one of her favorite designers, Viktor and Rolf  We love the appliqued rose at the bodice.

Golden Globes: Which party will Brad Pitt hit?

How to hit seven parties in three (maybe four) hours? It’s impossible. And that’s what makes the Golden Globes parties so much fun. And so stressful.

I will be among the horde of over-dressed people frantically trying to hit all seven post Globes parties tonight at the Beverly Hilton. Imagine about 5,000 very tipsy people — many wearing clickety-click siletttos — scurrying through the lobby in designer gowns and tuxedos, going up and the elevator in droves, waiting impatiently in long lines, some clutching party tickets, the lucky ones wielding Globes statues — an instant “in” to any party  –  from the Instyle Warner Bros bash, also a Globes viewing party, to the Fox bash just steps away on the Robinson’s May garage roof  where the “Glee” stars will be hanging.

Everyone races around because they may have heard someone they know (or don’t know) whisper that the hottest party is the NBC Universal/Focus bash on the Hilton roof (Think “30 Rock” folks) or maybe everyone who’s anyone is now heading to the AMC/ Sundance Channel party,  where the stars of “Breaking Bad,” “Walking Dead” and “Mad Men” will be squeezed into the wine store in the lobby. Or maybe the best bash has become the Weinstein/Relativity bash at the old Trader Vic’s space, now Bar 210, where the “King’s Speech”  contingent and friends (Colin Firth,  Helen Mirren,  Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush) will be.

Christian Bale still channeling ‘Fighter’ Dicky Eklund

Christian Bale was clearly still in his “The Fighter” character, Dicky Eklund, backstage at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday (Jan. 14). But hey, why not. His astonishing portrayal of the Lowell, Massachussets fighter/crack addict just got him a Best Supporting Actor award. And he may get another award for the role at the Golden Globes on Sunday (Jan. 16).

A very jovial and animated Christian revealed that Dicky’s secret to a good punch is “Everything comes from the ass!” Asked if playing crack-addicted Dicky was akin to prepping for the role of an emaciated insomniac in “The Machinist”, he said, “It’s Dicky, man. He’s unlike any other character. The physical stuff, that’s just the beginning. That’s just a way to get into it . . . he’s something else, I love him to bits. We’re good friends now.”

Oh, and he also told everyone to go to dickyeklund.com for good fight training. Just be sure to bring your ass.

Natalie Portman says ‘Black Swan’ spoofs are a tribute

Natalie Portman is one step closer to an Oscar! She picked up the Best Actress awards Friday (Jan. 14) at the Critics Choice Awards for her prima ballerina part in “Black Swan.” And she’s up for another round on Sunday night (Jan. 16) at the Golden Globes.

Backstage, the pregnant star posed for photos with her huge crystal Best Actress award and talked about the similarities between actresses and ballerinas.

“I think one of the interesting things, and because I started so young acting, you get used to seeing yourself out of your body. I think dancers have that a lot with all the mirrors. They’re used to seeing the reflection of themselves rather than being themselves. I think that happened to the character a lot where she sees herself out of her body in her life. It’s a struggle as an actor to remain rooted and anchored to yourself while being so aware of what you look like to other people.” ”

Scarlett Johansson pops her cork for Moet & Chandon

Scarlett Johannson has been a brand ambassador for Moët & Chandon since 2009. But her new bubbly ads are hitting the Web today, just two days before the Golden Globes.

Why is that important? Because it’s genius marketing, that’s why.

Scarlett  — already in the headlines for her surprise split from hubby Ryan Reynolds — will be a presenter at the 68th annual Golden Globe awards, which just happens to be the 20th anniversary of Moet & Chandon’s partnership (They are part of the LVMH luxury conglomerate) with the internationally  televised event. The company will serve 1, 000 mini bottles of Moet & Chandon’s Imperial bubbly to stars and press on the red carpet and 500 magnum bottles during the dinner and show.

Will Cher shock with Bob Mackie at the Golden Globes?

Cher really did “Turn Back Time” at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards when she wore — at age 64 –  an outfit almost identical to the scandalously sheer garter-belted, bare-cheeked costume  from her 1989 “Time” music video. You know, the one where she was bare-cheeked and be-gartered dancing on a battleship in stiletto heels, applauded by enthusiastic sailors.

“Oh, I wear  that (costume) every night onstage,” Cher demurred, referring to her ongoing Vegas concerts. “I  had it and I didn’t have time to think of an outfit for the MTV Awards and I just thought it would be fun.”

That headline-making appearance — and her recent sheer-shirted nipple-gate at the “Burlesque” Barcelona premiere — proves there’s still some shock value left in the old gal. Which has some fashion observers (like me ) wondering (OK, hoping) if Cher who, stars with Christina Aguilera in Screen Gems’ light-hearted musical romp might wear a Bob Mackie creation for the Golden Globes on Sunday (Jan. 16). Maybe even for the Oscars on Sunday (Feb. 27).
